5 Tips to Keep Your House Clean with Kids
Updated: Jul 31
Keeping your house clean while raising children can seem like a constant uphill battle. Finding the extra energy to do the cleaning in the first place can be a challenge, keeping it that way can be almost impossible some days. Here are 5 tips to help you:
The less clutter available around the house, the less mess. It’s also harder for kids to clean up and learn where things go in environments with an excess of clutter.
Get rid of things that don’t serve a purpose or that don't make you happy. Establish a decluttering routine so that clutter can’t accumulate.
2. LIMIT AND ROTATE TOYS
Kids are constantly growing out of toys.
Store or get rid of age-inappropriate toys and limit the number of toys that are available at one time.
Bonus! I feel like kids play more when there are fewer toys available because an excess of toys can be overwhelming.
Rotating different toys limits the amount of toys that need to be out at once, and also keeps kids engaged with “new” toys in their environment. 3. MAKE IT EASY FOR KIDS TO CLEAN
Make cleaning kid-accessible.
Children need to be able to access the areas where their things belong without a struggle.
Skip the toy bins that are hard to open and make sure their dish drawers/cabinets are within reach.
If you want them to hang up their coat and backpack, make sure they can get to the hook or coat rack.
You get the idea, the easier it is for the kids, the more likely they are to clean. 4. ESTABLISH GOOD DAILY ROUTINES
Kids thrive with routines, and well-established cleaning routines are essential for a clean home.
Create daily, age-appropriate cleaning routines with your kids and make sure they do them EVERY day so that the routines become habits.
Try a cleaning routine once in the morning and once before dinner or bedtime. Making cleaning routines fun, family time is an easy way to get the kids to engage in cleaning.
Daily cleaning routines save you time with weekly and monthly cleaning routines since the household stays “picked up”. 5. PROTECT YOUR SURFACES
This step is often overlooked, but the importance of adding a protective step to your cleaning routine grows by the day.
